Soy una fotógrafa autodidacta que vive en una pequeña ciudad costera al sur de Sydney (Australia). Donde vivo es un paraíso pero hay muy poca gente y no demasiados sitios interesantes para sacar fotos de calle. Todo esto es muy frustrante ya que soy una adicta a la fotografía de calle. Así que tengo que viajar a Sydney, a otras ciudades de Australia o al extranjero para que mi fotografía siga rulando! Pero lo que sí tengo es una piscina justo al final de la calle donde se reúne mucha gente y de la que veréis mucho en mi trabajo. Es un sitio precioso y el punto de encuentro de nuestra pequeña comunidad que ejemplifica el estilo de vida que llevamos aquí. Durante el verano se llena de visitantes y es mi época preferida para disparar ya que es un punto de fusión de culturas, color y acción.
I am a self taught photographer living in a small coastal village south of Sydney in Australia. The place I live is like paradise. But there are very few people and not a lot of interesting places to shoot. Given I am addicted to street photography this is very frustrating. So I have to travel to Sydney or other cities in Australia, or overseas to get my street photography kick! But, I do have an ocean pool just down the road where a lot of people gather and you can see this place in much of my work. It is a beautiful place and it is the focal point of our little community. It exemplifies the life style we have here. In the summer we have many visitors to the pool and this is my favourite time of the year to shoot as it is a melting pot of cultures, colour and action!
1- ¿Cómo definirías la fotografía de calle?
La fotografía de calle trata de observar y capturar personas y sus interacciones, gestos, movimientos y emociones. Va de capturar ese momento especial que no se puede repetir. La foto de calle perfecta tiene capas, emoción, movimiento, con frecuencia tiene un fondo limpio/despejado y algo singular que sucede y que no resulta inmediatamente evidente. También tiene que ver con la luz. El uso de la luz para acentuar el color, para crear sombras y siluetas, para capturar reflejos.
Para mi la fotografía de calle es una adicción y una búsqueda constante para capturar ese momento perfecto. Me encanta también el reto de meterme en una escena para conseguir ser invisible, perdiéndome en mi transparencia para fusionarme con la propia escena.
Street photography is about observing people and their interactions, gestures, movements and emotions and capturing those. It is about capturing that special moment that can’t be recreated. The perfect street photo has layers, emotion, movement, often a clean/uncluttered background and something unusual going on that is not immediately obvious. And it is also about light. Using light to accentuate colours, creating shadows and silhouettes and capturing reflections.
Street photography is an addiction for me and the constant quest to capture that perfect moment. I also love the challenge of inserting myself into a scene so that I’m invisible – losing myself in my invisibility and melding into the scene.
2- Fotógrafo favorito
Tengo tantos fotógrafos preferidos que no podría nombrarlos a todos. Los grandes maestros de la fotografía de calle que me han inspirado incluyen a: Elliot Erwitt (mi preferido), Shirley Baker, Joel Meyerowitz, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Saul Leiter, Alex Webb, Henri Cartier Bresson, Vivian Maier, Martin Parr and Garry Winogrand. Pero la mayor parte de inspiración me llega de fotógrafos de calle contemporáneos y por supuesto de mis colegas de fotografía de calle, ellos son los que verdaderamente me inspiran.

Jack Simon, Julie Hrudova, Muhammad Imam Hasann, Peter Kool and Ashnolo. Son maestros de las fotos inteligentes y peculiares.
Fotógrafos israelíes como Gabi Ben Avraham, Ilan Burla, Ilan Ben Yehuda y Alex Bronfer por su uso del color fuerte y subexpuesto y por su capacidad de acercarse mucho.
Willem Jonkers, quien me inspiró a experimentar el plano contrapicado para crear un efecto Gulliver.
Hay varios que usan el flash y que me inspiran como el increíble Dougie Wallace, Michelle Groskopf por sus preciosos ‘momentos’ detallados, Elisa Tomaselli, Salvatore Matarazzo y Boris el Flash.

I have so many favourite street photographers, I can’t possibly list them all. The street photographer ‘masters’ who have inspired me include Elliot Erwitt (my favourite), Shirley Baker, Joel Meyerowitz, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Saul Leiter, Alex Webb, Henri Cartier Bresson, Vivian Maier, Martin Parr and Garry Winogrand. But most of my inspiration comes from contemporary street photographers and of course from my fellow street photographers. They’re the ones who truly inspire me.

3- ¿Blanco y negro o color?
He disparado en b/n en el pasado pero ahora principalmente lo hago en color. De vez en cuando si estoy trabajando sobre un proyecto en particular, o retrato, o experimentando con flash, lo pasaré a blanco y negro. El color para mi es la esencia de la vida. Vemos en color y la increíble luz que tenemos aquí en Australia realza con bastante calidad todos los colores que nos rodean. Colores brillantes que contrastan con nuestro maravilloso cielo azul intenso Australiano es lo que me gusta reproducir en mis fotos.
I have shot black and white in the past, but now I shoot primarily in colour. Occasionally if I’m doing a particular project or portrait, or experimenting with flash, I will convert to black and white. For me, colour is the essence of life. We see in colour and here in Australia, the incredible light brings a certain quality to the colours around us. Bright colours against our beautiful vivid blue Australian sky is what I love to reproduce in my photos.
4- ¿Utilizas música cuando haces fotos o prefieres escuchar el sonido de la calle?
Ocasionalmente escucho un podcast sobre fotografía de calle mientras estoy disparando, pero la mayoría de las veces prefiero escuchar los sonidos de mi alrededor, especialmente las conversaciones entre personas. Si estás mirando una escena, es interesante escuchar el diálogo para intuir lo que va a pasar a continuación. De esta manera podrás prepararte para capturar un momento potente.
I occasionally listen to a street photography podcast while I’m shooting, but mostly I prefer to listen to the sounds around me – especially the conversations people have. If you are watching a scene developing, it’s interesting to listen to the dialogue between people to work out what is about to happen next. You can then prepare yourself to capture a potential moment!
5- ¿Espacios llenos o vacíos?
Me encantan las calles llenas, claro! Cuando hay mucha gente es fácil acercarse mucho a las personas. Cuando es así, prácticamente puedo posicionarme debajo de alguna persona y sacarle una foto sin que se dé cuenta. Ya hay bastantes calles vacías donde vivo!
I love crowded streets of course! It is easy to get very, very close to people in crowds. I can practically stand underneath someone in a crowd and take their photo and they don’t know. I have enough empty streets where I live!
6- ¿Cuál es tu herramienta (cámara, objetivos, móvil…) preferida? ¿Por qué y cómo la utilizas?
Me gustan todas mis cámaras y lentes. Pero mi preferida es la Fuji x70 ya que es pequeña, discreta, pero muy poderosa y con una lente fija equivalente a 28mm. También me encanta mi Fuji xT2 ya sea con la lente de 18mm o la de 14mm.
I love all my cameras and lenses. But my favourite camera is my Fuji x70 which is a small, discreet, but very powerful little camera with a fixed 28mm equivalent lens. I also love my Fuji xt-2 with either the 18mm or 14mm lens.
7- ¿Qué llevas en tu mochila fotográfica?
Depende de dónde vaya. Si voy a fotografiar a la piscina local iré solamente con la x70, con una tarjeta SD de más y baterías. Si va a ser un día fotográfico más largo o si estoy viajando, me llevaré la xT2, muchas baterías, un cargador, tarjetas SD y lentes de 14mm, 18mm y 23mm.
It depends where I’m going. If I go to the local pool to photograph I just take my x70 with an extra SD card and batteries. If I’m going on a longer day shoot or travelling, I take my xt-2, lots of batteries, an extra power bank, extra SD cards and the 14mm, 18mm and 23mm lenses. I also have the 50mm lens but use that for portraits and projects.
8- Consejo para los amantes de la fotografía de calle
Sal y dispara lo más que puedas, en cualquier condición meteorológica. Aprende todo lo que puedas mirando el trabajo de otra gente, escucha podcasts, lee blogs y mira foto-libros. Pero no te quedes sólo con la calle. Intenta experimentando con otras formas de fotografía para estirarte y únete a grupos de fotografía en las redes sociales que tienen concursos semanales o mensuales para forzarte a disparar regularmente y probar cosas distintas. Pero sobre todo diviértete haciendo lo que te gusta.
Just get out there and shoot as much as you can, in all kinds of weather. Learn as much as you can by looking at other people’s work, listen to podcasts, read blogs and look at photo books. But don’t just stick to street. Try experimenting with other forms of photography to stretch yourself and join photo groups on social media who have weekly or monthly challenges to force yourself to get out and shoot regularly and try different things. But most of all have fun doing what you love.
