Empezamos.
1- ¿Cómo definirías la fotografía de calle? / What is your definition of Street Photography?
Oh, buena para comenzar una entrevista. Para mí, la fotografía callejera es una fotografía sincera. Usas el espacio y las personas que te rodean para crear una imagen sobre un lugar, el tiempo, las cosas y la atmósfera. Puede ser sin contexto y sin título – Al contrario que en fotoperiodismo. Aun así, viendo todas esas galerías de Instagram hoy en día, creo que la definición de fotografía callejera es demasiado amplia.
Oh, nice one to start an interview. For me street photography is a candid photography. You uses the space and people around you to create an image about a place, time, things, mood. It can be without context and caption – not like in photojournalism. But looking for all those Instagram galleries nowadays I think that definition of street photography is too wide.
2.- Fotógrafo Favorito / Any favourite Street Photographers? Why?
En las diferentes etapas de mi desarrollo profesional, me he inspirado en varios elementos. Sin embargo, hay un artista cuyo trabajo me ha impresionado durante mucho tiempo: Martin Kollar. Este tipo de fotografía me encanta y estoy tratando de hacer algo en la misma línea, por supuesto agregando otros elementos para que sea más mi fotografía, que sea mas personal. Por supuesto, hay un gran círculo de artistas que me han impresionado en el camino.
At different stages of my professional development I have been inspired by various things. However, there is an artist whose work has impressed me for a long time: Martin Kollar. This kind of photography I love and I’m trying to do something in the same vein, of course adding other elements in order to make it more my photography, more personal to me. There is of course a large circle of other artists who have impressed me on the way.
3- ¿Blanco y negro o color? / Black and White or Colour?
Fui fotoperiodista. No fui a ninguna escuela de fotografía, empecé a aprender a mi propio ritmo. Ya estábamos en la era digital, por lo que mis herramientas también debían ser digitales. Desde el principio, tomo fotos principalmente en color.
I was a photojournalist. I didn’t go to any photography school, I started to learn at my own pace. It was already digital era, so my tools needed to be also digital. From the beginning I shoot primary in colour.
4- ¿Utilizas música cuando haces fotos o prefieres escuchar el sonido de la calle? / Do you listen to music while shooting, or do you prefer listening to the sound of the streets?
La música pertenece a un mundo maravilloso en el que puedes explorar y buscar algo que se adapte a tu estado de ánimo. Mi lista de reproducción en Spotify es bastante amplia: desde rap polaco y sonidos heavy guitarreros, hasta música electrónica y jazz. Pero al disparar en las calles, prefiero estar en contacto con el mundo, así que mis oídos no escuchan ninguna música.
Music is a wonderful world that you can explore and search for something that suits your mood. My playlist on Spotify is pretty wide: from Polish rap and heavy guitar sounds to electronic music and jazz. But while shooting on the streets, I prefer to be in touch with the world – so no music in my ears.
5- ¿Espacios llenos o vacíos? / What do you like better, crowded or empty streets?
Es un tema de personas. Incluso si no están en la imagen, sus creaciones están ahí. El estilo de trabajo puede hacer que la fotografía sea intrusiva, o educada. Aunque siempre será, en cierto sentido, mirar a los demás. Nunca he podido seguir a una persona más de unos segundos. Si ya he elegido a alguien, trato de anticipar dónde estarán un momento después para componer el marco. No me gusta esconderme detrás de alguien. Si la fotografía es un acto de alegría creativa, solo una actitud alegre la favorecerá.
It’s all about the people. Even if they are not in the picture, what they have created often is. The style of work can make photographing intrusive or polite. Although it will always be, in a sense, looking at others. I have never been able to follow a person for more than a few seconds. And if I have already picked somebody out, I try to anticipate where they will be a moment later in order to compose the frame. I don’t like to lurk behind somebody’s back. If photography is to be an act of creative joy, then only a cheerful attitude will favour it.
6- ¿Cuál es tu herramienta (cámara, objetivos, móvil…) preferida? ¿Por qué y cómo la utilizas? / What is your favourite photography tool (camera, lenses, smartphone)? Why? How do you use them/it?
Uso lo que tengo a mano en mi bolsillo en cada momento particular. No llevo mi cámara todo el tiempo conmigo. Cuando la tengo, es con una lente de 35 mm usando de zoom mis piernas. A menudo uso mi iPhone para tomar una foto en formato RAW o para hacer instantáneas de Instagram.
I use what I have in my pocket in particular moment. I don’t carry my camera all the time with me. But when I have it, it’s a 35mm lens with zoom in my legs. I often use my iPhone to take a picture in RAW format or snap for Instagram.
7- ¿Qué llevas en tu mochila fotográfica? / What do you carry in your camera bag?
No tengo mochila fotográfica. Pero, en serio … No se trata de lo que hay en tu bolsa, sino de lo que tienes en la cabeza. Tengo 31 años y recientemente he pasado por una gran transformación interna. También cambié mi estilo de fotografiar las calles, cambié una gran DSLR por una pequeña cámara sin espejo. Como fotógrafo, tengo la impresión de que sé cómo me gustaría fotografiar; por supuesto, son mis pensamientos actuales, como si fuera una toma de conciencia para hoy y algunos años más adelante. Para entonces espero que esas impresiones cambien de nuevo, mis horizontes se expandirán y encontraré nuevas fuentes de inspiración. De lo contrario, estaría quieto y nada bueno saldría de eso.
I don’t have a camera bag. But, seriously…It is not about what’s in your bag but what’s in your head. I’m 31 years old and I’ve recently gone through a major inner transformation. I also changed my style of shooting on streets, converted big DSLR to a small mirrorless camera. As a photographer, I have the impression that I know how I would like to photograph – of course this is just for now, an awareness for today and a few years down the line. Then I hope it’ll change again, my horizons will expand and I’ll find new sources of inspiration. Otherwise I’d be standing still, and nothing good would come of it.
8- Consejos para los amantes de la fotografía de calle / Any tips for Street Photography lovers?
Últimamente pienso mucho sobre la proporción entre la necesidad de reconocimiento, y la realización modesta de la propia pasión. Pienso que en las profesiones creativas, los comentarios de los espectadores son muy importantes. Sin embargo, las interacciones en las redes sociales son muy superficiales y nunca deberían ser tu principal objetivo. El problema es que no hay suficientes críticas valiosas a nuestro alrededor. La crítica constructiva te permite desarrollarte, ver tus errores y confrontar diferentes puntos de vista. Lo que no me gusta es la hipercrítica, cuando alguien no puede defender su opinión o se da por vencido sin pensar. No es propicio para una discusión adecuada, es solo una pérdida de tiempo.
Lately I think a lot about proportion between the need for recognition and the modest realisation of one’s passion. I think that for creative professions, the feedback from viewers is very important. But social media interactions are very shallow and should never be your main goal. The problem is that there isn’t enough valuable criticism around us. Constructive criticism allows you to develop, see your mistakes, and confront different points of view. What I don’t like is hypercriticism, when someone can’t argue their opinion or forms off the cuff opinions without thinking. It’s not conducive to a proper discussion, it’s just a waste of time.
