Hoy os traemos la que para nosotros es una de las grandes fotógrafas de calle actuales, Suzanne Stein. Nos chifla su edición (muy particular) y esas fotos a sujetos tan cercanas que casi puedes tocarlos.
Veamos que nos cuenta en su Píldora:
1- ¿Cómo definirías la fotografía de calle?
Lo que se ve en las calles, en sitios públicos. Cualquier cosa, todos y todo…en realidad para mí una foto de calle que tenga un significado debe crear algún tipo de representación precisa de cómo se ve o se siente un lugar. Aunque admiro el expresionismo abstracto en la fotografía de calle, en el fondo para mi no tiene mucho sentido. La fotografía de calle debe ser original, poseer la marca individual del creador y nunca, nunca dejar a nadie fuera. Incluso si resulta duro de mirar.
What is seen on the streets, in public places. Anything and everyone and everything….really, for me a Street photo that has any meaning should form some kind of accurate representation of what a place looks/feels like. Although I do admire abstract expressionism in Street Photography, it doesn’t really have much meaning for me. Street photography should have an urgency, it should be original, possess the individual mark of the creator and never, ever leave anyone out. Even if it’s hard to look at.
2- Fotógrafo favorito
Bruce Davidson, Helen Levitt, Henri Huet, Elliott Erwitt, Bernard Pierre Wolff…hay más, pero últimamente, primero van estos. Porque hay verdad; honestidad; un sentido, a veces abrupto, de la naturaleza fugaz de la vida. Sin abstracciones.

3- ¿Blanco y negro o color?
Hmmmmm…depende. Actualmente el blanco y negro para mi es un recurso sobreutilizado. Sí, es clásico; sí, me encanta y sí, yo también lo utilizo pero el color es más representativo y le da al fotógrafo otro nivel de comunicación con el espectador.
Hmmmmm…..that depends. Black and white is, in my opinion, at this time an over used device. Yes it’s classic, yes I love it, and yes I use it but color is more representative and gives the photographer another level of communication with the viewer.
4- ¿Utilizas música cuando haces fotos o prefieres escuchar el sonido de la calle?
He escuchado música una o dos veces pero después de haber recibido patadas, golpes o incluso de haber estado a punto de ser robada muchas veces, pienso que es importante estar con los pies en la tierra. Además, hablo con la gente! Y también, si estoy escuchando el arte de otro no estoy tan centrada en el mío.
Once or twice I’ve listened to music, but after being kicked, hit and/or nearly robbed many times I think it’s important to be grounded in my environment. Additionally, I talk to people! Also if I’m listening to someone else’s art I’m not as focused on making my own.
5- ¿Espacios llenos o vacíos?
Depende! Vacío con un personaje estelar es perfecto. Si están demasiado llenas es casi imposible crear una narrativa. Pero…personalmente prefiero actividad a vacío.
Depends! Empty with a stellar subject is great. Too crowded and it’s nearly impossible to form a narrative. But….I prefer activity over emptiness.
6- ¿Cuál es tu herramienta (cámara, objetivos, móvil…) preferida? ¿Por qué y cómo la utilizas?
Utilizo 2 máquinas: Fujifilm XT2 y XPro2. Tengo 3 lentes: 14mm, 16mm, And 35mm….’crop sensor’, no ‘full frame’. Utilizo el iPhone como mi diario personal en Twitter. El iPhone es perfecto para fotos rápidas sobre la marcha y los momentos capturados sin la presión de tener que resultar perfectos, con la cámara. Pronto tendré el iPhoneX y quizás lo use para escenas de calle más importantes, veremos.
I use 2 cameras: Fujifilm xt2 and xpro 2. I own 3 lenses: 14mm, 16mm, And 35mm….crop sensor, not full frame. I use my iPhone for my Twitter personal diary, iPhone is great for quick pictures on the fly, moments captured with no pressure to be perfect with my camera. I’ll have the iPhone X soon so perhaps I’ll use it for some more important street expression, we’ll see.
7- ¿Qué llevas en tu mochila fotográfica?
Solamente mi XT2 o XPro2 y mis tres objetivos. Voy a empezar a llevar mi flash de mano otra vez… Abandoné la costumbre mientras viajaba, pero un pequeño flash puede ser importante. También llevo limpiador de objetivos, baterías, y una variedad de tonterías de mujer también!
Just my xt2 Or xpro 2 and my three lenses. I’m going to start carrying my flash gun again….I got out of the habit while I was traveling but a little flash can be important. I carry lens cleaner, batteries, and assorted female purse junk as well!
8- Consejo para los amantes de la fotografía de calle
No te alejes de una foto a no ser que sea peligroso o que tengas miedo. Revisa siempre el trabajo y los procesos mentales a medida que te mueves mientras estás disparando. ¿Por qué perdiste la gran foto? Revisa las razones, memoriza tus errores y recuérdalos cuando vayas a coger la cámara la próxima vez que se presente una oportunidad. Y nunca, NUNCA copies. Aprende del trabajo de los demás, inspírate, pero no copies.
Don’t walk away from a picture unless it’s unsafe and you’re scared. Always review your work and your mental processes as you move throughout your shooting. Why did you miss a great picture? Review the reasons, memorizing your corrections, and remember them when you pick the camera up the next time an opportunity presents itself. And never, EVER plagiarize. Learn from the work of others, be inspired but don’t copy

Soy una fotógrafa de calle/documental que empezó a hacer fotos 2 años atrás. He sido una artista que antaño se concentraba en el estudio del rostro y la forma humana con lápiz y grafito, ahora estoy creando imágenes de la vida que veo en las calles de aquellas ciudades que más quiero. Tras acumular un corpus de trabajo en Los Ángeles, sigo trabajando para crear fotos de fuerte contenido narrativo que a su vez transmitan el conjunto de mis sentimientos de lo que ocurre ante mi; formando y componiendo la imagen para encajar y expresar mis puntos de vista al igual que para mostrar y destacar varias realidades sociales. También me gusta capturar un momento pasajero que puede significar poco en el conjunto global, pero es parte de las yuxtaposiciones fugaces cotidianas. He trabajado en el oficio de la fotografía de calle en Paris, Estambul, Los Ángeles y actualmente estoy en la ciudad de Nueva York.
I’m a street/documentary photographer who began taking photographs two years ago. A former artist who once focused on pencil and graphite studies of the human face and form, I’m now creating images of life as I see it on the streets of the cities I most love. I’ve created a body of work in Los Angeles, and continue to work to create strong narrative pictures that convey everything from my feelings about what’s going on in front of me, forming and composing the image to suit and express my views as well as to showcase and illuminate various social realities. I also love to grab a moment’s passing that may mean very little in the grand scheme but is part of the daily parade of fleeting juxtapositions. I’ve worked at the art and craft of street photography in Paris, Istanbul, Los Angeles and am currently in New York City.
