Soy una fotógrafa autodidacta que vive en Brooklyn NY. El amor por la fotografía lo descubrí en mis 40’s y desde entonces, estoy obsesionada. No hay día que pase, que no salga a sacar fotos o a estudiar sobre fotografía. Cuando estoy en Nueva York, paso mucho tiempo en Coney Island trabajando sobre un proyecto a largo plazo. También he estado explorando sobre mi historia viajando anualmente a Cuba.
I’m a self-taught photographer living in Brooklyn, NY. I discovered my love for photography in my 40s and have been obsessed with it ever since. Not a day goes by without me either shooting or studying photography. When in NYC, I spend a lot of time on a long-term project at Coney Island. I’ve also been exploring my heritage with annual trips to Cuba.
1- ¿Cómo definirías la fotografía de calle? / What is your definition of Street Photography?
Intento no limitarme con definiciones. Hay mucha gente a la que le gusta decir que la fotografía de calle es esto y no lo otro, pero encuentro que esto limita y a veces incluso es una manera de darle más valor a un estilo sobre otro. A veces disparo lo que la gente consideraría es la verdadera fotografía de calle, pero también hago retratos de desconocidos cuando encuentro un buen personaje. Incluso mi fotografía de calle no está limitada a la calle en sí, muchas veces disparo en la playa, paseos marítimos y otros sitios.
I try not to limit myself with definitions. There are a lot of people out there who want to say street is “this” and not “that”, but I find that limiting, and often a way to assign value to one style over another. At times I shoot what people would say is true “street”, but I also do street portraits of strangers when I find a good subject. My “street” is also not limited to actual streets – I often shoot on the beach, the boardwalk, and other places.
2.- Fotógrafos Favorito / Any favourite Street Photographers?
Me inspiran los grandes maestros de la fotografía de calle, especialmente los que disparaban en NYC. Me encanta Helen Levitt y Elliott Erwitt, ambos capturaban la ciudad con humor. Esta es una de mis ciudades preferidas: hay humor y lo absurdo por todos lados, siempre y cuando se sea capaz de verlo.
I’m inspired by the masters of street photography, especially those who shot New York City. I love Helen Levitt and Elliott Erwitt, both of whom captured the city with humor. This is one of my favorite cities to shoot – there is humor and absurdity everywhere, if you are open to seeing it.
3- ¿Blanco y negro o color? / Black and White or Colour?
Cuando empecé a sacar fotos, las convertía siempre a blanco y negro. Un día tuve una conversación con un amigo, que a su vez es un fotógrafo conocido (y al que respeto mucho). Me dijo que aprendiera a trabajar con color y que no usara blanco y negro como excusa para evitar el color. También dijo que podría volver al blanco y negro cuando quisiera, pero que en general mi fotografía se beneficiaría aprendiendo cómo mirar y procesar en color. Tenía razón, pero esto no es decir que el color sea per se mejor. Estoy empezando un proyecto nuevo que probablemente sea en blanco y negro.
When I first started shooting, I always converted to black and white. One day I had a conversation with a friend who is a well-known photographer (and one that I respect). He told me to learn color, and not to use black and white as a “crutch” because I didn’t know how to shoot color. Also, I could go back to black and white whenever I wanted, but my photography would benefit overall from knowing how to see and process in color. He was right, but that’s not to say color is inherently better. I’m starting a new project which will likely be in black and white.
4- ¿Utilizas música cuando haces fotos o prefieres escuchar el sonido de la calle? / Do you listen to music while shooting, or do you prefer listening to the sound of the streets?
La mayoría de las veces no escucho música. Me gusta escuchar los sonidos de la calle. Además, a veces un sonido te puede llevar a investigar algo, como por ejemplo música que viene de algún sitio. Un día en La Habana, escuché una música buenísima que provenía de un edificio abandonado. Pasé por delante y había un guardia de seguridad junto a una señal que decía ‘fotos no’. Había una gran banda (más de una docena de personas) ensayando un espectáculo que se iba a ofrecer ese fin de semana. Me vieron y me hicieron señas para que entrara. Me dejaron sacar fotos mientras que ensayaban y bailaban. Si hubiera estado escuchando música, esto no hubiera pasado. No obstante, a veces necesito un poco de energía y flow durante mis paseos, es entonces cuando escucho rap y hip hop.
Most of the time I don’t listen to music. I like listening to the sounds of the street. Plus, sometimes sounds lead you to investigate something – like music coming from somewhere. Once I was in Havana and I heard great music coming out of an old abandoned building. I walked by and there was a security guard and a sign that read “no photos”. A large band (over a dozen people) was practicing for a show they were doing that weekend. They saw me and beckoned me inside and let me shoot while they practiced and danced. I would have never noticed that if I had music on. However, sometimes I need a bit of energy and flow to my walk, and during those times I’m likely listening to rap and hip hop.
5- ¿Espacios llenos o vacíos? / What do you like better, crowded or empty streets
Por lo general prefiero multitudes. Cuando hay más movimiento, hay muchas más oportunidades de localizar alguna escena interesante. En cualquier caso, a veces se encuentran escenas preciosas en sitios tranquilos.
Generally I prefer a crowd. There are many more opportunities to spot an interesting scene when there is a lot going on. However, sometimes you find a beautiful scene in quiet places.
6- ¿Cuál es tu herramienta (cámara, objetivos, móvil…) preferida? ¿Por qué y cómo la utilizas? / What is your favourite photography tool (camera, lenses, smartphone)? Why? How do you use them/it?
Tengo muchas cámaras, muchas más de las que necesito. Antes siempre tenía el deseo de comprar más equipos. Me gastaba el dinero extra en equipos y viajes. Finalmente comprendí que hay verdaderas ventajas en conocer tu máquina de fotos a fondo. Llevo más de un año sin comprar nada, y realmente no tengo nada en mente que comprar. Últimamente me gasto el dinero en libros de fotos. No solo es mejor para mi fotografía, sino que también es más barato! Las cámaras que uso más a menudo son una Leica M10 y una Fuji XT3, y casi siempre disparo con un 28 o 35 mm. Dicho esto, estoy convencida de que la herramienta tiene muy poco que ver con sacar una buena foto. He visto grandes fotos hechas con cámaras viejas o baratas, y fotos de mierda hechas con cámaras de gama alta.
I have a lot of cameras – many more than I actually need. I used to have a desire to keep buying more gear. Gear and travel were where my extra money was spent. I finally realized that there is a real benefit to knowing your camera inside and out. I haven’t bought anything in over a year, and don’t really have anything in mind that I want to buy. These days I spend my money on photobooks. Not only is it better overall for my photography, but much less expensive! The cameras I use most often are my Leica M10 and my Fuji X-T3 – most often I am shooting at 28 or 35mm. That said, I really believe that the tool has very little to do with making a good photo. I’ve seen great photos with old or inexpensive gear, and crap photos with top of the line stuff.
7- ¿Qué llevas en tu mochila fotográfica? / What do you carry in your camera bag?
Suelo llevar una mochila que intento sea lo más ligera posible. A parte de mi teléfono, llaves y dinero, llevo baterías de repuesto, una tarjeta de memoria extra, y poco más. También suelo llevar toallitas para las lentes y toallitas de mano.
Usually I have a backpack with me. I try to keep as light as possible. Aside from my phone, keys, and some money I have extra batteries, a spare memory card, and not much else. There are usually lens wipes and some hand wipes in there as well.
8- Consejos para los amantes de la fotografía de calle / Any tips for Street Photography lovers?
No tengas miedo en probar cosas nuevas: acércate, prueba con flash, visita barrios nuevos, viaja sola. No te gustará todo lo que pruebas, y sacarás muchas fotos malas pero también podrás descubrir nuevas técnicas o sitios que te encanten.
Hazte amiga de otros fotógrafos. Yo he aprendido una barbaridad de mis colegas fotógrafos que han sido generosos con su tiempo y conocimientos. A tu vez, haz todo lo posible por apoyar a los demás.
Estudia y aprende de la historia de la fotografía. Hay tantos recursos: libros, películas, YouTube, etc… Muchos de ellos son gratis. Cuantas más fotos veas y estudies, más se agudiza tu mirada.
Don’t be afraid to try new things – get close, try flash, check out new neighborhoods, travel by yourself. You won’t like everything you try, and you’ll take a lot of bad photos, but you may also find a new approach or a place you love.
Befriend other photographers. I have learned a tremendous amount from my photography friends who have been generous with their time and knowledge. Do your best to be supportive as others as well.
Study and learn photographic history. There are so many resources out there – books, films, YouTube, etc. Many of them are free. The more photos you look at and study, the sharper your eye will become.
