Vivo en Gante (Bélgica) y soy miembro de ‘Observe’, un colectivo internacional que se centra, pero no se limita a la fotografía de calle. He expuesto internacionalmente y he sido ponente invitada y jurado de varios festivales de Europa y EEUU, de lo que estoy muy agradecida. Cada experiencia ha sido una oportunidad de aprender e inspirarme en otros. En cuanto a estilo fotográfico, siempre me han atraído las situaciones con una luz especial así como los contrastes llamativos. En especial, me gustan las escenas evocadoras con un toque oscuro, ya sea en color como en blanco y negro.
I am based in Ghent, Belgium, and I am a member of Observe, an international collective that focuses on but is not limited to the practice of street photography. I’ve exhibited internationally and been a guest speaker and judge at several festivals around Europe and the US, for which I am very grateful. Every experience has been an opportunity to learn from and get inspired by others. In terms of photographic style, I’ve always been drawn to extraordinary lighting or striking contrasts. I particularly love evocative scenes with a dark twist, in colour as well as black and white.
1. ¿Cómo definirías la fotografía de calle?
En realidad no tengo. Los géneros son constructos bastante artificiales y encuentro que limitan mi creatividad. De hecho, seguramente no me catalogaría como una fotógrafa de calle, solo soy una persona que saca fotos en lugares públicos de manera espontánea y sin planificar. Fotografío desconocidos, pero lo que de verdad intento es aprovechar para entenderme a mí misma. Imagino que algo de esto podría ser fotografía de calle y otras cosas no pero, en el fondo, me resulta irrelevante. No me gusta encasillarme.
1. What is your definition of Street Photography?
I don’t really have one. Genres are rather artificial constructs and I find that they limit my creativity. As a matter of fact, I probably wouldn’t call myself a street photographer, just someone who often takes photos in an unplanned and candid way, in public spaces. I take photos of strangers but what I’m really trying to seize and understand is myself. I guess some of that may qualify as street photography and some may not, but ultimately that’s irrelevant to me. I don’t like boxes.
2. Algún fotógrafo favorito y por qué
¡Hay tantos! No creo que todos estén considerados fotógrafos de calle, así que prefiero citar a algunos artistas cuyo trabajo me conmueve. Por ejemplo ‘Exiles’ de Koudelka y ‘Minutes to Midnight’ de Trent Parke son dos libros a los que vuelvo una y otra vez. Son como un refugio! Otros fotógrafos cuyo trabajo admiro son Todd Hido, Gregory Crewdson, Alex Webb, Alex Majoli, y más cerca de casa, Frederik Buyckx, Bieke Depoorter, Cédric Gerbehaye, Carl De Keyzer. También me inspiran otras formas artísticas: Roger Deakins o el director de fotografía belga Nicolas Karakatsanis hacen cosas maravillosas, y cuando veo su trabajo enseguida siento la necesidad de coger la cámara y hacer fotos.
2. Any favourite Street Photographers? Why?
There are so many! I don’t think they all fall into the category of street photographers, though, so I’d much rather just list some artists whose work moves me. For instance, Koudelka’s Exiles and Trent Parke’s Minutes to Midnight are two books that I go back to again and again. They are like a warm blanket. Other photographers whose work I admire include Todd Hido, Gregory Crewdson, Alex Webb, Alex Majoli, and closer to home, Frederik Buyckx, Bieke Depoorter, Cédric Gerbehaye, Carl De Keyzer. I also find inspiration in other art forms: Roger Deakins or Belgian cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis make beautiful things, and watching their work makes me want to pick up my camera straight away.
3. ¿Blanco y negro o color?
Ambos. No me gusta limitarme en nada. Últimamente me siento atraída más hacia el blanco y negro, pero algunas escenas piden color a gritos. Uno tendría que hacer lo que pide la foto.
3. Black and White or Colour?
Both. I don’t like to limit myself in any way. Lately I’ve been drawn to black and white more, but some scenes are just begging for some colour. You have to do what the photo tells you.
4. ¿Utilizas música cuando haces fotos o prefieres escuchar el sonido de la calle?
A veces me pongo auriculares anti-ruido porque el ruido fuerte puede causarme dolor, pero solo son otra cosa que llevar encima y tampoco quiero aislarme totalmente del entorno. Efectivamente, la música me ayuda a ponerme a tono, así que a menudo la escucho mientras edito o repaso mis impresiones. Las fotos, la música, e incluso un determinado gusto, acaban combinándose para formar un todo. Tengo sinestesia así que a menudo mis sentidos interactúan.
Últimamente he puesto en modo repetición el trabajo en solitario de Jason Molina, así como ‘The Covers Record’ de Cat Power; ‘Spirit of Eden’ de Talk Talk; y cualquier tema de Portishead, Max Richter, Grouper, Jóhann Jóhannson, por mencionar algunos. Disfruto con la rutina tranquila de poner un disco, beber café y trabajar en algo que de verdad me gusta.
4. Do you listen to music while shooting (if so, what kind of music), or do you prefer listening to the sound of the streets?
Sometimes I put on my noise-cancelling headphones because loud noises can be painful to me, but they are just another thing to carry around and I don’t want to be completely cut off from my surroundings. Music does help me get in the right mood, so I often listen to it while I’m editing or working with prints. The photos, the music, even a certain taste, they all combine to form one whole. I have synesthesia so my senses often interact.
Lately Jason Molina’s solo work has been on repeat, as has Cat Powers’ The Covers Record, Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden, and anything by Portishead, Max Richter, Grouper, Jóhann Jóhannson, to name but a few. I enjoy the calm routine of putting on a record, drinking coffee, and working on something I love.
5. ¿Espacios llenos o vacíos?
A primera vista, las calles llenas parecen más sencillas, pero no lo son, pueden distraer la atención de historias interesantes. Además, no me gustan las multitudes: me producen claustrofobia y me sobrecargan los sentidos. Así que personalmente me atraen más las calles vacías con quizás alguna figura solitaria aquí o allá. Ésa es la historia que quiero contar.
5. What do you like better, crowded or empty streets?
Crowded streets seem easier at first sight, but they are not. They can distract you from the more interesting stories. Plus, I really don’t like crowds: they make me claustrophobic and overload my senses. So personally, I am more drawn to empty streets with maybe a lone figure here and there. That’s the story I want to tell.
6. ¿Cuál es tu herramienta (cámara, objetivos, móvil…) preferida? ¿Por qué y cómo la utilizas?
Utilizo una Fuji X100F. También tengo algunas cámaras analógicas y una Nikon básica, e incluso utilizo la XT2 de mi marido, pero no lo suelo hacer. Me gusta la facilidad de no tener que elegir qué equipo usar según la situación. La Fuji es una extensión de mi cabeza y es como veo el mundo: a través de la lente o a través de mis ojos, es igual.
6. What is your favourite photography tool (camera, lenses, smartphone)? Why? How do you use them/it?
I use a Fuji X100F. I also have a few analogue cameras and a basic Nikon, and I could also use my husband’s X-T2, but I hardly do. I like the simplicity of not having to choose what equipment to use for what kind of situations. My Fuji is an extension of my brain, it’s how I see the world: through the lens or through my eyes, it’s all the same.
7. ¿Qué llevas en tu mochila fotográfica?
No llevo mochila, solamente la cámara, alguna batería extra y tarjetas SD en los bolsillos del abrigo. Sufro dolores crónicos y el cuerpo no me permite dar paseos demasiado largos o ni siquiera llevar un bolso ligero. También me gusta la libertad de poder deambular con la cámara y nada más. A veces me acompaña mi perra que puede llevar una botella de agua en su mini mochila, pero ir con ella me distrae. Si estoy lejos de casa, mi marido me lleva las cosas, es mi apoyo.
7. What do you carry in your camera bag?
I don’t carry a camera bag, just my camera and some extra batteries and SD cards stuffed in my coat pockets. I suffer from chronic pain and my body doesn’t allow me to go for very long walks or carry around even a light bag. I also like the freedom of just walking around with my camera and nothing else. My dog sometimes joins me and could carry a bottle of water in her little backpack, but she makes it hard to focus. If I’m away from home my husband carries my stuff for me. He’s my rock.

Haz lo que te gusta. Dispara lo que sientes. No le des muchas vueltas a las cosas.
8. Any tips for Street Photography lovers?
Do what you love. Shoot what you feel. Don’t overthink things.
